What is a Bench Drill
Walk into almost any woodworking shop, metalworking studio, or serious DIY garage, and you’ll find one standing quietly in the corner — the bench drill press. Sturdy, purposeful, and unwavering in what it does, it has remained largely unchanged in its core design for over a century. And for good reason: it works.
Unlike a handheld drill, which relies on the operator’s steadiness, the bench drill press constrains the cutting tool to a perfectly vertical path. The result is a hole that is cleaner, more precise, and far more consistent than anything achievable freehand. It’s the difference between carpentry and craftsmanship.
How it works
The principle is straightforward. An electric motor at the top of the machine drives a spindle through a series of pulleys or gears. That spindle holds a chuck — the toothed collar that grips the drill bit. When the operator pulls down on the feed lever, the entire head assembly slides down the column, driving the rotating bit into the workpiece clamped to the table below.
Because the column is fixed and the head travels only along that column, the drill bit can never wander sideways. Every hole drilled is perpendicular to the table surface — or, if the table is tilted, at whatever precise angle you’ve set. A depth stop lets you pre-set the exact drilling depth, so when you’re drilling fifty holes at 12mm deep, every one of them is exactly 12mm deep.

Jewellers, model makers, and electronics hobbyists use miniature bench drills for delicate work that demands sub-millimetre accuracy.
In industrial settings, larger floor-standing drill presses handle thick steel plate, heavy castings, and high-volume production runs where speed and repeatability are paramount.
Choosing the right one
Bench drill presses come in two main forms: benchtop models, which are compact and mounted to a workbench, and floor-standing (pedestal) models, which are larger and heavier with greater capacity and power. Key specs to consider include the swing — the diameter of the largest circle you can drill the centre of — the spindle travel, the range of speeds available, and the throat depth, which determines how far from an edge you can drill.
For most home workshops, a benchtop model with a 5/8-inch chuck and variable speed is more than adequate. Professional or metalworking applications benefit from a floor-standing model with greater rigidity, a larger table, and a wider speed range to handle tougher materials.
Safety and best practice
Despite its mechanical simplicity, the bench drill demands respect. The workpiece must always be clamped — never held by hand — since a bit catching in material can spin the workpiece with considerable force. Eye protection is non-negotiable, and hair and loose clothing must be kept well clear of the rotating chuck. Running the machine at the correct speed for the material and bit size not only improves cut quality but prevents heat buildup that can dull bits prematurely or, in the case of plastics, melt the work.
Used correctly, a bench drill press is one of the safest power tools in the workshop — far safer than a handheld drill on a clamped workpiece, precisely because the geometry is fixed and the operator’s hands remain well away from the cutting zone.
A timeless tool
In an era of CNC routers, laser cutters, and 3D printers, the bench drill press has not been displaced. It remains faster, simpler, and more cost-effective for the vast majority of hole-drilling tasks than any computer-controlled alternative. Its longevity is a testament to elegant engineering: a tool so well matched to its task that nothing better has come along to replace it.
