A circular saw is only as good as the blade mounted on it. The motor, the base, the bevel adjustment — none of it matters much if you’re using the wrong blade for the job. Choosing the right circular saw blade affects cut quality, cutting speed, blade life, and even safety. This guide breaks down everything you need to know.

What a Circular Saw Blade Is Made Of

Most modern circular saw blades fall into a few core categories based on construction:

  • Steel blades – Inexpensive and easy to sharpen, but they dull quickly and are mostly limited to soft materials. Rare in professional use today.
  • High-Speed Steel (HSS) blades – More durable than plain steel, holding an edge longer, but still not ideal for demanding cuts.
  • Carbide-tipped blades – The industry standard. Small tungsten carbide teeth are brazed onto a steel blade body, giving a sharp edge that stays sharp far longer than steel alone. Most blades you buy today are carbide-tipped.

  • Combination (ATBR) – Alternates ATB teeth with a flat-top raker tooth, giving a blade that rips and crosscuts reasonably well without switching blades.
  • Triple Chip Grind (TCG) – Alternates a flat tooth with a trapezoidal “chip” tooth. Excellent for hard, abrasive, or brittle materials like laminate, MDF, and non-ferrous metals.

Blade Diameter and Arbor Size

Circular saw blades come in standard diameters — commonly 7-1/4 inches for typical worksite saws, along with 6-1/2 inch and 10 inch options for smaller trim saws or table saws. The blade must match both the saw’s rated diameter and its arbor (center hole) size, which is usually 5/8 inch on most consumer saws. Using a mismatched blade size is unsafe and often physically impossible to mount correctly.

Choosing a Blade for the Material

  • Framing lumber / rough carpentry – 24–40 tooth ripping or framing blade
  • Plywood and finish carpentry – 60–80 tooth fine-finish blade
  • Melamine, laminate, MDF – TCG blade to prevent chipping
  • Non-ferrous metal (aluminum, copper) – Specialty TCG metal-cutting blade with more teeth and a slower recommended feed rate
  • Masonry, tile, concrete – Diamond blade, never a standard wood blade

Blade Maintenance and Lifespan

A dull blade doesn’t just cut poorly — it’s a safety hazard, since it requires more force and is more prone to kickback. A few maintenance basics:

  • Clean built-up pitch and resin off the blade periodically using a blade cleaner or mild soap and water.
  • Store blades flat or hung to avoid warping the plate.
  • Carbide-tipped blades can be professionally resharpened multiple times before replacement is needed.
  • Inspect for missing or chipped carbide teeth before every use — a damaged tooth can cause an unbalanced, dangerous cut.

Safety Notes

  • Always match the blade’s maximum rated RPM to your saw’s RPM — never exceed it.
  • Make sure the blade is mounted with the teeth pointing in the correct rotation direction (usually indicated by an arrow on the blade body).
